Anmitsu(あんみつ)
JAPANESE FOODS
01.07.2025

In my experience, anmitsu remains largely unknown to most foreigners, whether they are tourists or residents of Japan. Proof of this is that I had no idea what it was until I went to a cafe, saw it on the menu, and tried it. Let’s know more about it!
What exactly is anmitsu?
Anmitsu is a traditional Japanese dessert that stands out for its delicate balance of flavors and textures. It consists of jelly, various kinds of fruit, sweet red bean paste (anko), and is often accompanied by ice cream or sweet rice flour dumplings (shiratama dango). This refreshing sweet has been a popular choice in Japan since the Taishō period.

What is the mitsu?
The mitsu part of anmitsu is a sweet black syrup, specifically called kuromitsu, which one pours onto the jelly before eating. I have found places where they serve the kuromitsu separately so that you can add the amount you want, or it is already mixed with the jelly.

This is the reason why you should try anmitsu
You should give anmitsu a try—it’s a delightful way to experience the elegance and simplicity of traditional Japanese sweets. Its refreshing mix of flavors and textures offers a light yet satisfying treat, ideal for hot summer days or whenever you’re in the mood for something sweet but not too heavy. With its vibrant and artful presentation, anmitsu is just as visually appealing as it is delicious.
