Business Trips(出張)

WORK’IN JAPAN

26.04.2025

I think it is common to go on business trips in all countries, especially in certain industries. However, from my point of view, it is much more common in Japan, because if you get on a Shinkansen or take a domestic flight to another city, it is not unusual to see many people in suits and with light luggage, ready for a one-day or overnight business trip.

My first business trip to Fukuoka!

I’m writing this article because, just under a week ago, I went on my first business trip to Fukuoka! I basically went for one night only, but I had the whole first day to myself, so I could explore the city and taste its delicacies. (I’ll write more articles about the delicious food in Fukuoka!)
Nevertheless, I think the amount of free time you have depends on the schedule of the trip and, of course, on the company itself.

What is covered by the company?

I believe this also depends on the company, so it’s hard to generalize. But at the very least, transportation (plane, Shinkansen, etc.), accommodation (if needed), and any travel expenses you incur during your trip (such as transportation to the airport) should be covered.
In my case, there was a business dinner, which was paid for by the company, but the rest of the meals (except hotel breakfast) were not included.

Things I had to do after the trip

As I mentioned above, transportation expenses are usually reimbursed. After the trip, I had to fill out an Excel file listing all the transportation I used (from home to the airport, from the airport to the hotel, to the workplace, etc.).
Once it was completed, I just sent it to the person in charge, and later, they transferred the appropriate amount to my bank account. Talking with others in Japan, this seems to be a common practice.

How was my overall experience?

When I was asked if I was willing to go to Fukuoka for one night to work, I didn’t hesitate for a second. First, because I had never been to Fukuoka and wanted to add it to my list of visited cities, and second, because I thought it was an opportunity that doesn’t come often, and I wanted to gain the experience.
The truth is, everything went quite well—and changing your work environment and even your colleagues can be really refreshing. If I had the chance to do it again, I would say yes without hesitation.
And you? Have you ever been on a business trip in Japan?
